Teaching in Prison

Search, Shame and Digital Rehabilitation

Claire Silverstone-Bright teaches in prison through DRIFT: Digital Rehabilitation, Infrastructure, Framework and Training, a programme that helps people understand, manage and respond to the digital barriers that can follow contact with the criminal justice system.

For many people leaving prison, the internet can feel like a second sentence. Discovering what other people have written about you can feel as though a bomb has gone off in the middle of your new life. You may search your name and find a version of yourself that feels partial, distorted or even like a hoax: a person built from headlines, fragments, assumptions and missing context.

DRIFT does not pretend the past disappears. It teaches people how to face search results with steadiness, understand what the internet is and is not, build a truthful and positive digital identity, and prepare for difficult conversations with employers, landlords, professionals, family members and the wider public.

Claire’s teaching combines lived experience, postgraduate criminology research and practical rehabilitation work. Her approach is rooted in the belief that people are more than the worst thing that appears about them online. Digital rehabilitation is about restoring proportion, dignity and possibility after prison.
